The Antisocial Network

The Antisocial Network is a Netflix documentary that explores the dark side of the web culture taking a closer look at the history of memes from harmless jokes to manipulation and illudery and how the truth became a surrounding object.

The movie is a frightening look at how the internet is impacting the world around us and the extent to which our actions online do not always have their intended effect in the real world and the role we play in the virtual world.

A Propulsive yet Plain Documentary

You’ll Want to Delete Your Apps After Watching This Netflix Documentary

It is described as both captivating and straightforward as it draws a correlation between minor internet games that were happening in 2000 to the events that took place on January 6th at the US Capitol.

It’s a taut, finely-polished movie that always feels uneasy in its depiction its subject of memes turning real.

This Film Will Show You How Social Media is More Hazardous Than You Think.

The movie also looks at the role of internet culture and meme culture particularly the emergence of ‘trolling’.

It was once when people who are not accepted by society goes to the platforms anonymously to participate in a dare fight or say a competition to dazzle each other by throwing their words at the very real happening specific event.

This desire to score an upvote and the ability to cloak were the eyes and ears of those who liked to cause trouble.

The Dark Side of Anonymous Collectives

Warning: This Movie Will Make You Rethink Everything You Post Online

The documentary features the founding fathers of 4chan, a website known for its unsavory content, and members of the hacker group Anonymous.

It highlights how Anonymous started as a socially conscious movement against racists and bigots but eventually spawned an unhinged offshoot known as QAnon, which subscribed to conspiracy theories about a cabal of liberal elites operating a child sex trafficking ring.

The Negative Impact of Anonymous Platforms.

Warning: After You See This Movie You Will Never Look At Your Social Media The Same Way Again.

The documentary takes viewers behind the scenes as it follows the two creators of 4chan’s website and the members of the anarchist hacktivist organization known as Anonymous.

It captures how Anonymous began as a socially conscious community fighting against racists and bigots but later evolved to an even more dangerous offshoot in the form of the Qanon which grounded its actions on conspiracy theories of a liberal, elite-pedophile trafficking ring.

A Mixed Portrayal of Characters

This Isn’t Your Average Tech Documentary…It’s Scary

The Complicity of Platforms

To What Extent Do Social Media Understand You?bI Said This Film Would Shock You.

One of the glaring oversights in the movie is the absence of focus on the role of Facebook and other means such as Whatsapp (now combined under one umbrella following a name change by Facebook) in spreading fake news.

4 chan on the other hand is easier to manipulate and is still somewhat niche compared to the website in question.

The relation between Facebook and elections has been widely discussed and even a few more times, but the movie totally ignores this aspect of Facebook.

Those who are already familiar with Elon Musk will be well aware that this is not your traditional technology documentary.

The documentary presents a critique of the characters objectively while at the same time being less judgmental about them even when some of them risked risks of arrest by the police.

One man even went into (a) hiding for months. It looks like the filmmakers see them as the rebellious rock’n’roll stars as opposed to socially less than acceptable people.

It is fascinating and definitely one that Internet culture enthusiasts should catch.
