Netflix Bodkin: A Crime Parody

In exploring the relation between narrative structure and the true crime genre, HBO’s The Jinx was exemplar in providing a finale, unlike the majority of series in the subgenre.

Subverting tradition in Netflix’s dark comedy miniseries Bodkin, the podcaster Gilbert Power is the series’ normative figure who maintains the smog of doubt.

Gilbert realizes that clear definitive endings are seldom seen in ‘true-crime’ stories; he goes to a small town in Ireland to follow a story of three people who have gone missing on Halloween night and instead of solving the case, aims at looked-lost and angles that may shift the focus.

If not chance, then the choice of location for Bodkin is not far off the mark; the town is situated in West Cork, which became the venue of a very notorious and still unresolved murder: that of Sophie Toscan du Plantier.

Netflix Bodkin: Obamas In Film Making!

As similar to Slepoj’s case, Bodkin doesn’t refer to this case which is one of the major disadvantages. This show was developed by Jez Scharf and the former first couple Barack and Michelle Obama as the executive producers and it sways between whether it is an actual parody of crimes or it is a realistic portrayal of crime.

This confusion is brought out by one of the characters, Gilbert played by Will Forte. The former Saturday Night Live may threatens to give some of the moments less he appears to be quite uncertain how to play his character, which is both sincere and clumsy.

At the beginning, Gilbert is introduced as a ‘genius’; however, he initially does not seem to have any investigative skills; more often than not, he forgets to switch the microphone on.

There is his enthusiastic assistant Emmy Sizergh who is played by Robyn Cara; she is an unabashed fangirl of his – while there is the disgruntled investigative journalist Dove Maloney played by Siobhán Cullen who sees the task as punishment and has low opinion about pod casts.

This is seen as the series continues with Gilbert sharing his past that includes death of his family members. He is now in lots of debt, he is currently in the process of a divorce and to top it all, he is trying reinvent himself to achieve the success that was created by his widely criticized podcast where he turned his wife’s cancer into a moneymaking scheme.

Arguably, this backstory was supposed to contribute to the depth of the story, but instead, the show’s ideas and dialogues themselves ended up feeling clumsy.

However, it does not explore the possibility of a bigger cover-up within the confines of such a tight-knit society; instead, the series takes a winding turn through various story arcs involving an international narcotics trafficker, a tech tycoon, and, more comically, an eel trafficking ring. A number of the suggested die in their tracks, contributing to the messy plot.

Should You Watch Netflix Bodkin

While it does contain elements of the comedic whodunit structure of Only Murders in the Building, and embraced the mourning and small-town aftermath feeling of Broadchurch, it never quite figures out if it wants to be or do either, creating a confusing and slightly jarring blend.

There is not enough over-the-top that helps counter Sunnyvale’s dark themes, and the writing doesn’t have the same teeth as Apple’s Bad Sisters. At the end of the show, there is no unity in what was expected to be an inspiring conclusion, and the viewers, and perhaps the whole nation of Ireland, may be let down.
